About

A little more.

I'm Gabriel, an independent AI policy researcher based in Salt Lake City studying AI governance. My background is in science communication, and I'm applying those strategic communication skills to reducing risks from powerful AI systems.

AI may be one of the most consequential transitions humanity goes through, and how it unfolds will shape the wellbeing of all of us. The risks I worry about most: in the near future, increasingly capable AI systems could let bad actors cause serious harm, and we could also lose control of systems that end up pursuing goals different from our own. I want humanity to keep its options open through this transition, steering toward a future where we can still make our own choices.

I came to this work after originally planning a career in public health or fitness. Once I understood the urgency around AI safety, I became convinced it was the most important thing I could work on. A lot of my focus right now is on helping AI safety communicators be more effective, especially when it comes to advancing policy outcomes. I also co-lead the Community and Civil Society Engagement Group, a Special Interest Group (SIG) within Utah's Responsible AI Community Consortium, where I work on bringing more people into the conversation. I love meeting new collaborators and am usually game for a call.

I grew up in Salt Lake City and spend a lot of my free time outside of work dancing, mostly bachata. I also enjoy exercise and getting outside, with some bikepacking and backpacking. A few years ago I bikepacked the Great Divide mountain bike route from New Mexico to Canada. In the past I've put a lot of time into ceramics and bouldering, and I'm slowly trying to meditate more.
